How Does a Spark-Proof Vane Flow Meter Work?

The meter body contains a rotor with sliding vanes. Each vane creates a small measuring chamber. Gasoline fills each chamber and rotates the rotor. One full rotation equals a fixed volume. A mechanical register or a pulse sensor counts the rotor turns. The signal can go to a local totalizer or to a PLC via 4-20 mA HART.


Because the chambers are fixed, the output is volumetric. Temperature changes affect gasoline volume, so you may need PT100 temperature compensation if you want net volume at 15 °C. Most engineers skip this part for small retail pumps. But custody transfer points usually add a flow computer with temperature correction.


Where Do Volumetric Transfer Vanes Fit in Fuel Dispensing?

Common installation points include truck loading racks, fuel terminal transfer lines, aviation refueling carts, and diesel generator day tanks. For retail gasoline dispensers, a vane meter with a mechanical counter is still used in many markets. For a fuel terminal with flammable vapor, the meter must be spark-proof. ATEX Zone 1 and IECEx certificates matter for procurement teams in the Middle East and Africa.

Also tell us if the location is Zone 1 or Zone 2. If possible, include viscosity in cP. Gasoline viscosity is low, near 0.6 cP at 20 °C. Diesel is higher, around 3 cP to 5 cP at 20 °C.
