A pulse signal does not drift with loop resistance. It does not need analog scaling in the PLC program. It gives a direct count for volume. What a Flow Meter Pulse Output Actually Sends

Your PLC digital input expects a voltage level, often 24 V DC. An open collector output does not drive voltage by itself. You add a pull-up resistor to the PLC supply. A typical wiring takes four wires: two for power, two for pulse signal. For an electromagnetic meter, power is 24 V DC or 220 V AC depending on model. The pulse wire runs to a PLC digital input. The common wire runs to the same PLC ground reference. If the pulse output is open collector, add a pull-up resistor from the signal wire to 24 V DC.
Use shielded cable for runs longer than 10 m. Ground the shield at the PLC cabinet side only. Do not ground both ends unless you have a serious ground loop problem and know how to handle it. Problem one: the PLC input LED flashes but the count does not increase. Check the input filter time. Standard digital inputs often have a 10 ms filter. If the pulse width is below 10 ms, the PLC misses pulses. Use a high speed counter input with microsecond filters or reduce flow meter max frequency.
Problem two: the count is stable at low flow but wild at high flow. The pulse frequency may exceed the PLC input limit. Calculate the max frequency before installation. A DN80 electromagnetic meter at 100 m3/h with 1 L per pulse gives about 27.8 Hz. That is easy. If the pulse volume is very small, the frequency can jump into the kHz range and standard PLC cards will miss counts.
