Water Meter 1/2 Specifications for Small Residential Utility Feed Pipe Connections

1/2 Inch Water Meter in DN and Nominal Bore Terms

Engineers and plumbers use 1/2 inch as a common name. The actual bore of a DN15 meter body is usually 15 mm. The thread fitting outside diameter is close to 20.9 mm for BSP or NPT male threads. This causes confusion when someone measures the thread and expects 12.7 mm.


In practice you should specify DN15 on the datasheet. Write 1/2 inch only as a reference. Utility feed pipes for small residential buildings typically use DN15 or DN20 at the meter. A 1/2 inch meter fits DN15 pipework with reducing or matching couplings.


Common Thread Types and Utility Feed Pipe Connections

Most small residential utility meters in Southeast Asia and the Middle East use BSP threads. In Latin America NPT threads are more common. The difference matters because BSP and NPT are not fully interchangeable. A BSP male thread forced into an NPT female fitting can seal poorly and may damage the first threads.

A standard 1/2 inch residential water meter has a working pressure of 10 bar or 16 bar depending on body material and end connection. Temperature rating is often 30 °C for cold water models. Hot water meters can reach 90 °C but those are less common on small utility feed pipes.


We recommend PN16 for utility feed lines because pressure spikes from pumps can exceed 10 bar at night. Some housing projects in Africa use booster pumps without pressure regulating valves. The meter body and threaded joints must survive those peaks.


Flow Range and Accuracy Class

For DN15 water meters the starting flow rate can be as low as 0.03 cubic meters per hour for Class C or R160 models. Typical permanent flow rate Q3 is 2.5 cubic meters per hour. Overload flow rate Q4 is 3.125 cubic meters per hour. These values suit a single villa, a small office, or one utility feed branch.

Materials Used in Small Residential Water Meters

Brass is the standard body material for 1/2 inch meters. Some projects specify lead free brass for drinking water compliance. In coastal areas we sometimes suggest a plastic body meter for salt air resistance. The internal measuring element is usually a rotating piston or a multi jet impeller.


Multi jet designs hold up well in dirty water. Rotating piston designs give good low flow accuracy but can jam if sand enters the line. A strainer upstream solves most problems. We have seen this on customer sites in Thailand and Egypt many times.
